Project/Program Management Curriculum Design

December 5, 2005 Leave a comment

The Project/Program Management Curriculum was created to strengthen the company’s overall project management capabilities and capacity. In the past, the project management training had been provided (developed and instructed) solely by internal staff. The new curriculum provides a combination of courses provided by the company and outside vendors.

This project allowed me to look at a series of current and future courses in detail so that it could be effectively organized into a curriculum. It’s tough when you haven’t actually developed or taken the courses, but analyzing the course descriptions, outline, objectives, and summaries, I find that one could get a pretty good idea.

Role: Instructional Designer

  • Research project manager courses for inclusion to the PM curriculum.
  • Wrote course descriptions.
  • Assisted in the mapping of courses to competencies.
  • Created interactive webpage for easier visualization of required and recommended courses in the curriculum categories.

Project Challenges/Issues & Solutions

Challenge: There are lots of vendors that supply Project Management courses. Each vendor also has their own equivalent curriculum that we will need to break apart and fit to our needs.

Solution: Created tools to help us analyze the large amount of data. Tools, and a lot of time analyzing the details helped us get through to a final curriculum that addresses all of our needs.
